In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Gudiel Crosthwaite, Superintendent of the Sunnyvale School District, to explore how AI is beginning to shape public education, and how districts can approach this powerful technology responsibly and thoughtfully.
Dr. Crosthwaite has nearly 30 years of experience in public education, from classroom teacher to district leader, with a deep commitment to equity, innovation, and student success. Most recently, he served as superintendent of the Lynwood Unified School District, where his leadership earned him recognition as the 2023 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year and where he oversaw significant academic gains, increased graduation rates, and major community initiatives.
The Sunnyvale School District serves more than 5600 students across elementary and middle schools in the heart of Silicon Valley, and under Dr. Crosthwaite’s leadership continues to build on its strong tradition of academic excellence and community engagement. Dr. Crosthwaite keeps a strong focus on equity, innovation, and student success.
In our conversation, he shares how Sunnyvale School District is approaching AI not as a replacement for teachers, but as a tool to support instruction, personalize learning, and strengthen decision-making—while maintaining human connection at the heart of education.
We discuss key questions facing school systems today like:
- How can artificial intelligence support learning while keeping students, educators, and communities at the center?
- How can AI support teachers without adding to their workload?
- What safeguards are needed to protect student privacy and data?
- How do we ensure AI reduces, rather than deepens, educational inequities?
- What skills do students need to thrive in an AI-driven future?
This interview offers an honest and hopeful look at the opportunities and challenges of integrating emerging technologies in public schools—especially in diverse communities like Sunnyvale. Dr. Crosthwaite emphasizes the importance of transparency, community engagement, and ethical leadership as education systems adapt to rapid technological change.
